A MySQL Case Study
Uppsala Clinical Research Center (UCR) is Sweden’s national competence center for healthcare quality registries, managing treatment and outcome data for about 1.5 million patients used by thousands of clinicians. As UCR integrated the registries with digital patient journals and primary care systems, data collection shifted from web forms to automated transfers—projected to at least double data volume—creating a critical need for a scalable, high‑performance, always‑available database platform.
UCR powered its OpenQreg platform with MySQL Enterprise across a four‑server MySQL topology (DB‑Master, DB‑Prod, replicating slave and stage) within an Apache/Tomcat/Java on Red Hat stack, and adopted MySQL Enterprise for monitoring, proactive advisories and 24x7 support. The solution handles the current 1.5M patient records and nightly analysis/reporting workloads, serves thousands of users reliably, and is ready to absorb upcoming growth from the SeniorAlert integration (rising from ~2–3k registrations/month to ~2–3k/day) while maintaining performance and uptime.
