SPEECH DESIGN, a leading European provider of messaging and mobility solutions used by over 130,000 companies, built the Thor Application Platform to deliver call-completion and next‑generation messaging for mobile operators. The challenge was to offer revenue-generating, user-valued services (addressing ~40% of mobile calls that don’t connect) while meeting carrier requirements for high availability, low latency, scalability, integration with OSS/BSS, and cost-effectiveness.

To meet those needs SPEECH DESIGN replaced a proprietary database with MySQL Cluster Carrier Grade Edition for THOR, gaining millisecond response times, 99.999% availability, geo-replication and linear scalability on commodity hardware. The switch reduced database licensing and development costs, accelerated time-to-market, and enabled visual voicemail and callback features that recover lost revenue, reduce network load, and support large-scale subscriber growth with carrier-grade reliability.
