Case Study: Sagem Monetel achieves a 20-fold cut in database licensing costs and streamlined terminal administration with MySQL

A MySQL Case Study

Preview of the Sagem Monetel Case Study

Sagem Monetel slashes costs and greatly enhances ease of administration of its electronic terminals with MySQL

Sagem Monetel, a Safran subsidiary in southern France that builds smart-card electronic transaction terminals, relied on its Terminal Management System (TMS) to centrally update, configure and diagnose hundreds of thousands of devices. Rising proprietary database license fees and complex administration were increasing TMS costs and reducing the product’s competitiveness.

After evaluating options the company migrated TMS to MySQL 5.0 (with short vendor training) and reworked the client interface using PHP/Apache. The change slashed database licensing and installation/configuration costs (about a 20× reduction), sped deployments (around ten MySQL servers sold in months), and simplified development and administration via stored procedures, views and MySQL tools—delivering greater stability, scalability and a stronger foundation for future features like logging and clustering.
