Quantel Innovates with MySQL to Reduce Time-to-Air for Broadcasters

Quantel supplies high-performance production systems used by broadcasters such as ESPN to get breaking news and sports content on air quickly. As broadcasters moved from tape to disk, Quantel faced major inefficiencies—multiple physical copies of media, growing metadata needs, and a requirement for instant, always-available references and a zero-touch embedded database—to meet tight time-to-air targets.

Quantel solved this by developing FrameMagic (frame-level reference management) and an Integrated Server Architecture to avoid data copying, and by embedding MySQL (OEM) for a low-complexity, replicated, high-performance, zero-administration database. The combined solution reduced storage costs and copy times, improved operational reliability and scalability during peak bulletin periods, and enabled broadcasters to deliver content to air faster.
