Paggo Relies on MySQL Cluster and Java to Deliver Financial Transactions over Telecom Networks

Paggo is an SMS-based mobile payments company that lets buyers, merchants and private-label credit issuers complete low-fee transactions via text messaging. After launching with Brazil’s largest GSM operator, Paggo faced the typical payments challenge: build a 24x7, data-durable, scalable system that could grow with new merchants and users while keeping startup costs low.

Paggo implemented MySQL Cluster Carrier Grade Edition with Java, deploying more than 160 data and server nodes geo-replicated across two data centers to deliver fault tolerance, incremental scaling and 99.999% availability. The solution handles core functions (credit issuing, billing, authorization, reporting), has enabled onboarding of ~40,000 merchants and 1.2 million subscribers, processes hundreds of thousands of transactions monthly (about $25M in transaction value) and adds thousands of subscribers per day while controlling costs.
