MySQL Enterprise powers 2 Million Referrals in Central Hospital Registry

Sahlgrenska University Hospital, one of Europe’s largest teaching hospitals serving Göteborg and the Västra Götaland region, processes two million referrals and comments annually through its Central Registry—a Java‑based, mission‑critical system that manages about 100 GB of data and up to 2,000 concurrent users. Because different care units need flexible patient profiles and continuous access, the hospital required a highly available, reliable and configurable database solution.

Sahlgrenska implemented a MySQL Enterprise subscription to provide a secure, high‑performance backend integrated with the Lab Information System and the LabBest GUI, storing orders and outcomes in XML and supporting EMR and mobile connectivity. The result: uninterrupted operation with strong performance and scalability (planned growth to terabytes and thousands of users), improved flexibility for care units, and high satisfaction from clinical staff.
