MySQL Cluster Helps Mapion to Improve its User Experience

Mapion Co., Ltd., Japan’s leading online map service provider, faced growing infrastructure strain after deciding to generate its own map images in-house—requiring tens of millions of files—and to expand fee-based mobile and broadband services. The company needed a scalable, highly available system with minimal downtime, faster image generation, simplified application updates, and better operational management to preserve user experience and support rapid growth.

Mapion standardized on a Sun platform (Solaris 10, Sun servers, StorageTek, Solaris Containers), deploying MySQL Cluster for the Mapion Mobile customer system and Sun GlassFish for Mapion BB. The new architecture delivered 99.999% availability and near-zero downtime for mobile customer management, enabled batch application deployment to reduce management effort, and cut map image generation time from about one month to under ten days—improving user experience, lowering operational overhead, and reducing power use through virtualization.
