A MySQL Case Study
Genoscope, France’s national sequencing center and a major contributor to genomics research, needed a way to make large volumes of DNA sequence and comparative data accessible to biologists worldwide while supporting rapid deployment of new database applications. The team required a platform combining high performance, ease of administration and cross‑platform availability to keep pace with growing environmental‑genomics workloads.
Genoscope replaced its Sybase stack with MySQL (using MySQL 5.6, MySQL Workbench and MySQL Enterprise Edition for support and monitoring), and has deployed about 300 MySQL databases storing roughly 8 TB of data. Around 250 databases power web applications for specific genomic datasets (the largest system handles over 5 TB across ~30 databases) and ~50 serve BI and project management needs. The change delivered faster deployments, better performance and easier administration, significantly increasing database usage across the organization.
