Deal Group Media scales out online advertising with MySQL

Deal Group Media (DGM), a pioneer UK affiliate network that has expanded into South Africa, Australia and Spain, faced a surge in traffic as affiliate marketing grew. Their banner-serving system, originally backed by a central database, began to suffer stability and failover problems as impressions, clicks and sales scaled toward billions, creating a need for ultra-fast response times and near-zero downtime.

DGM rebuilt its delivery platform as modular, self-contained LAMP web servers with a local MySQL delivery database on each node, using stored procedures, load balancing and periodic log shipping to a central data store. The new architecture delivered millisecond banner responses, handles millions of transactions per day, achieves about 99.9% uptime, is easy to scale by adding servers, and requires minimal administration.
