County Government Turns to MySQL to Help Support its Citizens

Pottawattamie County, Iowa, faced an aging, under-powered IT environment—only a handful of Windows NT servers running incompatible Informix and Microsoft SQL Server applications—which made systems brittle, insecure and slow to support citizen services within tight budget constraints. The county’s IT leadership set out to modernize operations and improve service delivery by replacing legacy, proprietary systems.

PCIT rebuilt its infrastructure on a LAMP stack and standardized new development on MySQL, mirroring legacy data to deliver fast, secure web access to public records and migrating critical warehousing and administrative systems to MySQL. In under two years the department doubled staff, moved to 14 Dell Linux servers, built a $300,000 network operations center, and achieved faster deployment, higher reliability, scalability, lower costs and reduced vendor lock-in.
