A MySQL Case Study
Atos, a global IT services company serving 52 countries, was asked in 2009 to drastically reduce the total cost of ownership for UCS, the mission‑critical clearing engine for Euronext cash and derivatives markets. The challenge was to migrate away from a proprietary HP NonStop‑SQL/MP environment while guaranteeing high availability, robustness and much greater performance and scalability to handle rapidly growing transaction volumes.
Atos re‑engineered UCS on an open‑source stack—Linux, MySQL Enterprise Edition (primarily InnoDB), Apache/Tomcat and C/Java—using multi‑instantiated business‑process components, SAN‑backed blade servers and synchronous replication between two data centers 40 km apart. The 15‑month, 12,000 man‑day project delivered a platform that processes over 1 million transactions per day (benchmarked to handle >6M), simplified maintenance, cut TCO, and earned strong customer satisfaction; Oracle’s MySQL support also provided rapid fixes during testing.
