Case Study: Aftonbladet achieves mission-critical reliability and scalability with MySQL Enterprise

A MySQL Case Study

Preview of the AftonBladet Case Study

Aftonbladet, Sweden’s largest news group, bets on MySQL

Aftonbladet, Sweden’s largest media group founded in 1830, operates the Nordics’ biggest newspaper and Aftonbladet.se, which draws about 4.2 million unique visitors per week. Facing rapid traffic growth and a strategic shift to open source, the company moved from static HTML to Oracle and then—starting in 2004—chose to standardize on MySQL for price-performance, flexibility and to support mission-critical editorial, intranet and publishing systems without disrupting the user experience.

Aftonbladet migrated its core services (website, NewsPilot editorial platform, intranet apps and Escenic publishing) to MySQL Enterprise, using tools such as MySQL Enterprise Monitor, Query Analyzer and 24x7 support alongside a high-performance stack (load balancers, Varnish, memcached). The migration was seamless to users, delivered uptime and reliability equal to or better than the previous proprietary setup, gave DBAs tighter control over performance and security, and reduced costs while enabling faster rollout of new online services.
