Consumers Energy, which provides electric service to 1.8 million customers and natural gas to 1.7 million in Michigan’s Lower Peninsula (serving over 8 million residents overall), needed a better way to route field crews who service customer meters. Manual route planning was inefficient and time-consuming, impacting response times and operational costs.
In 2014 the company adopted MyRouteOnline, whose ease of use, bulk-editing, Excel import and Garmin upload streamlined route creation and allowed service times to be built into ETAs. The change enabled 5–7 routes per day with 25–55 stops each, produced arrival estimates that match reality, and delivered about a 15% improvement in performance and corresponding cost savings, along with responsive vendor support.
