Case Study: Wistia halves bandwidth and improves video delivery with Mux Data (MUX)

Wistia used Mux to monitor their new adaptive bitrate algorithm

Wistia, a video platform for digital marketers serving over 300,000 businesses, needed to validate a new HLS adaptive bitrate algorithm developed by engineer Max Schnur to see if it would outperform their existing progressive MP4 delivery. They used MUX’s monitoring product, Mux Data, to gain the visibility required to compare player performance during the migration.

Using Mux Data, Wistia discovered the default HLS rendition selection was too conservative and implemented a revised algorithm that picks the minimum or average bitrate based on how far ahead the video is buffered; Mux Data let the team iterate, fix bugs, and quantify the impact. The change halved Wistia’s bandwidth use, and MUX continues to enable ongoing testing and improvement as Wistia evaluates fragmented MP4, DASH, VP9, and other options.
