How TED improved their viewer experience score by 60%

TED, the world-renowned conference and education brand, built its own end-to-end video production and publishing pipeline but lacked ongoing, reliable measurement of viewer experience. As a result, its engineering team struggled to validate experiments, identify performance issues, and understand where the video experience could be improved. TED turned to Mux Data from Mux for outside validation and better visibility into its platform.

With Mux Data, TED was able to pinpoint issues affecting low-end and KaiOS devices, including miscategorized traffic and JavaScript complexity on its video pages. The team created a lighter version of the page, tagged devices more accurately, and used Mux Data to verify playback performance and compare a new video pipeline against the old one. As a result, TED improved its viewer experience score from 48 to 77, a 60% increase, while gaining the confidence and metrics needed to roll out changes and set quantifiable goals.
