A Mural Case Study
Trello, part of Atlassian and led by Head of Design Chris Kimbell, runs a largely distributed product design team (about 70% remote) that needed to recreate the tactile, visual collaboration of in-person workshops for synchronous meetings and design sprints. Their challenge was enabling equal participation for remote and office attendees and replicating whiteboards, sticky notes and voting in a way that supports focused, creative work — so they adopted collaboration tools including Mural as their multiuser visual and tactile collaboration surface.
Using Mural, Trello replaced physical whiteboards and stickies with digital murals for exercises like nuanced voting, placing “How Might We” notes on journey maps, and sharing higher-fidelity assets; they paired Mural with Zoom and Figma for presence and rapid prototyping. Mural made regular remote design sprints practical, preserved engagement through shared rituals, improved the clarity and shareability of ideas, and helped Trello attract and retain high‑caliber remote designers — outcomes Trello describes as better-quality work and more effective, repeatable remote collaboration.
