Marching Backwards Into The Future with Backcasting: Interview with Ephraim Bhato

Disney's HR strategic foresight team, spread across the U.S., U.K., France, India, China and Australia, needed to run backcasting—a visual, collaborative method to plan 20 years into the future—despite the challenges of time zones, limited real-time creative participation on calls, and difficulty capturing and iterating visual artifacts remotely. To address this, the team turned to Mural’s visual collaboration workspace and backcasting templates.

Using Mural, participants co-created murals in real time, captured feedback, and built a traceable backlog of ideas while working asynchronously over weeks rather than in single sessions. The result was dramatically increased participation, fewer fragmented whiteboard photos, stronger cross-functional alignment and faster decision-making—Ephraim Bhatoo reports the team could make decisions twice as quickly and that the work would have been very difficult to accomplish without Mural.
