How USAA leverages async collaboration for inclusive workshops

USAA, a large employer focused on improving employee onboarding, wanted to reimagine new hire orientation for a hybrid, rapidly changing work environment while keeping inclusion and accessibility top of mind. To support that goal, USAA turned to Mural and its digital collaboration canvas to create an async workshop experience for workforce experience planning.

Using Mural, USAA ran a two-week async workshop with clear instructions, Slack reminders, pre-recorded videos, brainstorming, clustering, and voting activities, plus accountability checklists to track participation and support. The approach helped the team cover more ground before weekly live alignment meetings, improved accessibility and inclusion, and made it easier for everyone to contribute—not just the loudest voices—leading USAA to continue using the async-first model and request more workshops of this kind.
