Case Study: NSW Health Pathology achieves near-real-time EHR integration and rapid COVID-19 testing with MuleSoft

NSW Health Pathology efficiently integrates healthcare data to deliver better patient experiences

New South Wales Health Pathology (NSWHP) is the state’s public pathology provider, operating 60+ laboratories, 150 collection sites, and over 100,000 tests per day with 5,000 staff. Faced with siloed IT systems, NSWHP needed to digitize pathology results, expand point-of-care testing, cut transport and operational costs, and build an agile platform to respond to urgent demands such as COVID-19.

Working with Deloitte and MuleSoft, NSWHP adopted an API-led approach on Anypoint Platform (deployed in a month) and used MuleSoft’s HL7 connector to integrate 350 PoCT devices across 60 labs in three months, syncing results to EHRs in under five minutes. By reusing ten APIs it launched a COVID-19 results service in two weeks, delivering most results within 24 hours, registering 230,000+ patients for automatic negative-result messaging and saving clinicians thousands of hours.
