A MuleSoft Case Study
The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS), a global nonprofit funding blood‑cancer research and patient services, faced scaling and integration problems with an outsourced fundraising application for its flagship Team in Training program. The hosted solution caused outages, duplicate transactions, weak back‑end integration and a 7% per‑transaction fee, prompting LLS to regain control of infrastructure to improve reliability, user experience and reduce costs.
LLS built an in‑house platform with Adobe Flex front ends and a Mule ESB Enterprise + ActiveMQ integration backbone, using built‑in retry and persistence strategies to ensure no message loss and full redundancy. The new system scales beyond 24,000 messages/hour, delivered 100% uptime and zero message loss, processed 500,000+ messages and raised over $10M in the first four months, while cutting fundraising fees from 7% to about 2%.
