Liberty saves millions of dollars using API-led connectivity

Liberty Holdings, a South African financial services and insurance group, struggled with a slow, error-prone claims process because customer, claims, and underwriting data were siloed across multiple monolithic back-end systems. Claims processors had to extract information from seven different systems into spreadsheets and log into others to complete a claim, prompting a digital transformation to modernize legacy systems, create a single customer view, and enable automated, omnichannel claims handling.

Using MuleSoft’s API-led connectivity, Liberty unlocked backend data to build a digital claims platform and a state-manager API that lets staff access and resume in-progress claims across web, mobile, and contact-center channels. The solution automated payments and policy updates, reduced claim handling by up to 20 minutes per claim, delivered $3.2 million in savings and about 14,000 claims-processing hours saved, and achieved a 40% API reuse rate to speed future development.
