Deakin University, led by Chief Digital Officer William Confalonieri, faced major digital disruption: changing funding and competitive pressures, plus a fragmented IT landscape of roughly 200 applications that made it hard for students and staff to access services. To stay competitive and deliver the digitally native student experience it needed, Deakin set out to create a personalized portal (DeakinSync) that would unify access to learning, administrative and support services across four campuses.
Deakin implemented MuleSoft’s Anypoint Platform with partner Sixtree to solve the integration “puzzle,” connecting disparate systems and delivering single sign‑on, contextualized services for 50,000 students and 4,700 staff. After the 2013 launch, almost 20,000 students were using DeakinSync within six months for bookings, payments, library and health services; the platform drove a seamless, more satisfying learning experience, supported strong graduate outcomes (95% employment) and helped earn Confalonieri industry recognition.
