How APIs are powering innovation in Winston-Salem

Winston‑Salem/Forsyth County Utilities (WSFC Utilities) is modernizing its utility operations to meet growing infrastructure needs and rising customer expectations as the region expands. Facing limitations with legacy point‑to‑point integrations, the organization needed a centralized, secure, and reusable integration strategy with developer standards and better visibility to support new systems like AMI, GIS, billing, and work‑order platforms.

WSFC implemented an API‑led approach using MuleSoft’s Anypoint Platform to connect core systems (CIS, CMMS, GIS) and enable real‑time data sync and reusable integration assets. The project improved field response times, met billing and meter service requirements, expanded ad hoc work‑order routing, reduced duplication of effort, accelerated future projects, and positioned the utility to integrate AMI/IoT and deliver more data‑driven customer services.
