Airbus digital transformation takes flight with APIs

Airbus, a global leader in commercial aviation with about 25,000 daily flights, faced a scaling challenge: legacy IT systems could not support the production ramp and efficiency improvements needed as demand grows. To cut costs, speed development, streamline the supply chain, and give frontline teams real-time access to data, Airbus set objectives around an enterprise API platform, reusable APIs, and self-service mobile tools.

To meet those goals Airbus’ Digital Accelerator implemented MuleSoft’s Anypoint Platform as an API-first foundation, building a library of reusable APIs that aggregate data from SAP, Skywise and other systems. The APIs power a mobile shop‑floor app (including barcode scanning), provide real‑time supply‑chain visibility to stakeholders, and are reused across internal and external applications. The result: IT project delivery accelerated about fourfold (from ~4 months to 4–6 weeks), developers can produce new APIs in days, and Airbus is realizing faster, more efficient aircraft manufacturing and improved operational visibility.
