A Mubaloo Case Study
Bristol Zoo sought to enhance the visitor journey by using mobile technology and rich media to deepen encounters with animals. As part of the Wild:i two‑year collaborative R&D project, Mubaloo designed and developed the Wild:i app for wildlife venues (including Bristol Zoo Gardens), bringing together content and technology from partners such as BBC R&D, University of Bristol and Toshiba Research Labs to explore a new interactive visitor experience.
Mubaloo delivered an Android tablet app that combined site maps, galleries, quizzes and challenges and supported live, low‑cost IP image/video delivery and user‑generated content. Trials at Slimbridge and Bristol Zoo Gardens (evaluated by BBC R&D) involved 146 participants, produced on average 12 pieces of user content per user, and recorded an average session length of 2 hours 38 minutes — increasing time spent with each animal and enhancing the visit, especially for children; users said it helped to “bring things to life” and “it was the most enjoyable aspect of the app.”
