Aviva, the UK’s largest insurer, worked with Mubaloo through its Innovation Garage to explore beacon technology on the iPhone to drive last-minute travel insurance sales. The challenge was to use hyper-location to engage existing Aviva customers in airports, trigger the right message at the right time, and create upsell opportunities by integrating beacon-triggered messaging with Aviva’s Travel app.

Mubaloo implemented a proof of concept placing beacons behind Aviva promotional banners to detect users in departure lounges and launch notifications to their Travel app; the streamlined seven‑screen iPhone flow lets customers enter a flight number, get real‑time quotes for three policy options, purchase in-app and receive confirmation. The POC successfully demonstrated precise targeting and a simple conversion path, and Mubaloo’s work has led Aviva to advance the concept with deeper customer‑database integration for more personalised offers.
