Leading Pharma Company partnered with Mu Sigma to improve how its R&D team identified Key Opinion Leaders (KOLs) across medical publications. The challenge was that relevant research was spread across English and Japanese databases, often under different languages and regional sources, making manual search strategy development slow and heavily dependent on subject matter experts.
Mu Sigma built an NLP- and ML-based search solution using medical word embeddings, UMLS Metathesaurus concepts, MUSE cross-lingual alignment, and a k-nearest neighbor retrieval layer to surface related Japanese publications from English search inputs. The result was a 17% increase in KOLs identified for one disease area, reduced effort in creating Japanese search strategies, and lower SME dependency, helping the company accelerate research and cut costs.
