A Mu Sigma Case Study
Global Largest Retailer, one of the world’s largest retailers, struggled with a slow, costly, and highly manual store space management process. Using traditional 2D planogram software and physical test-room reviews for more than 400 product categories across 5 store formats, the retailer faced major logistics costs, travel burdens, and limited visibility into shelf layouts. Mu Sigma helped address this challenge with its Virtual Interactive Shelf Planner (VISP), a digital 3D planogram visualizer and planner.
Mu Sigma implemented VISP to convert encrypted 2D planogram outputs into an interactive 3D environment where CMOs and GMs could review, compare, and modify layouts virtually from anywhere. The solution automated much of the planning and evaluation workflow, cutting annual rent and logistics costs by USD 720K, reducing hardware costs by USD 185K, and shortening planning time from 2 weeks to 4–5 days per category. Mu Sigma also enabled faster assortment planning, improved merchant participation, and quicker responses to changing customer preferences.
