Case Study: TREMEC reduces transmission nibble with MSC Software's Adams

TREMEC - Customer Case Study

TREMEC, a leading manufacturer of light-duty manual transmissions, needed a better way to diagnose and improve shift quality in an early six-speed prototype. Engineers were seeing “nibble” — jumps in shifter effort that affect driver feel — but physical testing alone was time-consuming and limited by the inability to visually inspect the transmission in operation. TREMEC used MSC Software’s Adams multibody simulation software to create a virtual prototype of the synchronizer mechanism.

Using Adams, TREMEC evaluated component forces and motion, tested design variants, and identified a change to the geometry of the synchronizing ring teeth as the best fix. MSC Software’s solution reduced nibble by 95.5% in simulation, and the updated physical prototype later verified a 93% reduction in nibble. The improved transmission contributed to stronger shift quality and rave reviews for the production vehicle.
