Case Study: Tenneco develops active exhaust noise cancellation with MSC Software Actran

Tenneco is developing an active exhaust system for OEM customers that can cancel unwanted engine noise while also producing more desirable sound. The company needed a way to accurately simulate the loudspeaker housing and exhaust system so engineers could evaluate low-frequency performance without relying only on expensive, time-consuming physical prototypes.

Using MSC Software’s Actran acoustic simulation software, Tenneco built a model of the loudspeaker alone and then integrated it into a complete exhaust system. MSC Software says the Actran results matched physical test measurements very closely, and Tenneco reported that simulation now lets it evaluate many design concepts quickly and develop its next-generation active exhaust system faster.
