Simulation Saves Millions per year by Getting Design Right the First Time

Litens Automotive Group used MSC Software’s Marc nonlinear finite element analysis software to study its TorqFiltr crankshaft vibration control technology. The company needed to understand the magnitude, location, and direction of forces, stress, deformation, and contact behavior in a small but complex mechanism that was previously customized through a time-consuming and expensive trial-and-error process.

With MSC Software’s Marc, Litens could simulate how the design behaves under dynamic loading, evaluate design alternatives before building the first prototype, and examine contact locations and forces throughout rotation. Dr. Steve Jia said the company is certain the approach saves “millions of dollars per year” across its product line, and Marc results were typically within 5% to 10% of physical testing, with some cases less than 5%.
