Simulating effects of warpage in an additively manufactured composite layup tool

Stratasys worked with MSC Software to address the challenge of predicting and reducing warpage in additively manufactured composite layup tools. The company needed simulation tools that could account for the thermomechanical effects of layer-by-layer printing, material microstructure, and process parameters before parts were printed.

Using Digimat-AM, MSC Software supported a multiscale FDM process simulation approach that modeled deposition, toolpath, material behavior, and warpage prediction. The simulation correlated well with 3D-scan measurements of a printed composite tool, and geometry compensation reduced the maximum deviation from 0.5 mm to less than 0.1 mm.
