Sigmadyne - Customer Case Study

Sigmadyne, an optics company, needed a way to predict how environmental factors such as heat, stress, and vibration would affect optical systems so they could optimize designs and minimize performance loss. MSC Software provided the tools, using MD Nastran for mechanical and thermal behavior prediction and SigFit to translate those results into inputs suitable for optical analysis.

With MSC Software’s integrated optomechanical workflow, Sigmadyne combined finite element analysis with optical simulation to evaluate wavefront error, surface deformation, birefringence, and vibration effects. The approach enabled optimization of a lightweight telescope mirror, and MSC Software reports that MD Nastran cut the design’s weight from 20.8 kg to 9.9 kg while still meeting optical and structural requirements, including launch stress, natural frequency, and thermal performance targets.
