A MSC Software Case Study
Knud E. Hansen A/S was contracted to assess the motion and lashing cable tensions of a large drill rig during its transport by an installation vessel for the Anholt Offshore Wind Farm. The challenge was to perform an accurate dynamic motion analysis of this complex multi-body system to ensure the safety of the marine operations and reduce the risks and costs of wind turbine installation for a maximum operational wave height.
MSC Software's Adams multibody dynamics simulation solution was used to create a detailed virtual prototype of the entire system. The simulation model incorporated rigid and flexible bodies, joints, and preloaded spring-dampers to accurately study the dynamic behavior in various wave and wind conditions. The results proved that the lashing arrangement was efficient and safe, as tensions did not exceed winch capacities, clearances were sufficient, and critical angles were within allowed limits, allowing the marine operations for the wind farm to proceed safely.
