Robotic Military Vehicle Developed in Under 18 Months Using Simulation

BL Advanced Ground Support Systems (BL), a defense vehicle specialist, needed to develop a robotic military vehicle platform that could handle a wide range of missions without a human driver, while avoiding the long delays caused by relying on outside simulation consultants. Using MSC Software’s Adams and SimXpert, BL built an internal simulation capability to support the design of its BLR robotic ground vehicle and speed up analysis during early concept development and detailed design.

MSC Software helped BL evaluate many design alternatives quickly, automate meshing and model setup, and run multibody dynamics and multidiscipline simulations in a single environment. As a result, BL reduced simulation turnaround from weeks to hours and is on track to complete the BLR in well under 18 months, compared with the 6 to 7 years typical for similar robotic vehicles. The faster simulation-driven process also improved design optimization, reduced costs, and gave engineers greater confidence in first-article performance.
