Nonlinear Simulation Helps Automotive Supplier Design Longer Lasting CV Boots

Race-Tec Sealing Limited, a leading supplier of high-performance seals and elastomeric products for automotive, racing, military, and off-road applications, needed to design a CV boot that could withstand extreme articulation angles without excessive stress, deformation, or contact. To address this challenge, the company turned to MSC Software and its Marc nonlinear finite element analysis software.

Using MSC Software’s Marc, Race-Tec simulated complex boot deformation, contact, and hyperelastic material behavior to quickly compare design alternatives and refine the boot geometry. The result was a dramatically improved CV boot design: height was reduced from 180 mm to 32 mm, an 82% reduction, while maintaining stress levels under maximum deformation. MSC Software’s solution helped Race-Tec reduce self-contact and impact risk, extend product life, and improve cost and time efficiency in development.
