National Defense Academy of Japan - Customer Case Study

The National Defense Academy of Japan studied how to build a more accurate fan model for CFD analysis of electronic devices, where simplified pressure-flow-rate assumptions were often causing errors. Professor Hajime Nakamura investigated why results from fan tests and CFD did not match, especially for small fans used in densely packed devices.

Using MSC Software’s SC/Tetra, the academy compared test data with CFD results and corrected the fan model by adjusting the PQ curve with dynamic pressure and defining a non-dimensional swirl coefficient. The revised model matched experimental results more closely and also helped analyze the effect of nearby blockages, giving engineers a more reliable way to model fan performance.
