Nagasaki University - Customer Case Study

Nagasaki University studied the aerodynamic characteristics and noise of scirocco fans used in residential ventilation equipment. The university wanted to understand how a fan shroud affected performance and broadband noise, and how rotating stall influenced those behaviors. MSC Software’s SC/Tetra was used to compare internal flow between fan geometries.

With MSC Software’s SC/Tetra, Nagasaki University evaluated flow, rotating stall, and noise for fans with and without a shroud. The analysis showed that the shroud increased fan efficiency, while also increasing noise by about 1 dB; it also prevented rotating stall, which occurred in the fan without the shroud. The university concluded that the shroud improved the overall performance of the scirocco fans.
