MSC Software Helps Renault Reduce Pass-by Noise

Renault needed a way to anticipate stricter pass-by noise regulations and improve vehicle acoustics early in the design process. To support this, the automaker extended its acoustic simulation capabilities with Actran from MSC Software to model exterior acoustic propagation and better account for noise constraints across its vehicle range.

Using MSC Software’s Actran, Renault evaluated noise sources such as the engine, tire-road contact, exhaust line, and air intake, then calculated transfer functions to the regulation microphones. The approach helped Renault divide run time by 5-7 for the engine radiation case, extend calculations from 2000Hz toward 5000Hz, and improve accuracy after validation against physical tests. The methodology is now used daily by Renault engineers to place absorbing materials where needed.
