MSC Nastran Provides More Accurate Solution to Assess Bone Fracture Risk

Infosys, a global leader in consulting and technology, worked with MSC Software to address the challenge of accurately assessing the risk of bone fracture in osteoporotic patients. Traditional diagnostic methods were primarily qualitative and did not account for critical mechanical factors of vertebrae, leading to imprecise risk assessments and potentially unnecessary treatments. The goal was to develop a more quantitative and patient-specific method using computational techniques.

The solution implemented by MSC Software utilized their MSC Nastran and Patran FEA tools to create a patient-specific 3D model from CT scans. This model analyzed the biomechanics of vertebrae, considering factors like shape, density distribution, and material properties. The results provided a more accurate, quantitative assessment of fracture risk based on computed stresses, surpassing traditional bone mineral density measurements. MSC Software's tools enabled doctors to precisely determine pathophysiology and select appropriate patient-specific treatments.
