MSC Apex Helps Reduce Time Required to Clean Up and Mesh Geometry by 75%

TLG Aerospace, LLC worked with MSC Software when Wings USA, Inc. asked it to analyze a proposed modification to a twin-engine light aircraft. The team needed to compare the pre- and post-modification geometry and determine whether the large circular cutout in the floor would significantly affect fuselage stiffness, but the original CAD model contained broken surfaces, overlaps, gaps, and geometry that needed to be cleaned up before finite element analysis and meshing.

Using MSC Apex, TLG Aerospace cleaned up the geometry, simplified it for meshing, and created the mesh with automatic updates as changes were made. MSC Software’s tool reduced the total geometry cleanup and meshing time to about 3 hours per configuration, or 6 hours total, compared with 25.2 hours using traditional tools, a savings of 76%. The results gave TLG Aerospace the data needed to move forward with the modification analysis.
