A MSC Software Case Study
Sant Longowal Institute of Engineering & Technology used MSC Software’s Marc to study a difficult welding problem involving dissimilar materials in heat exchangers. The institute needed a better way to understand how copper and stainless steel behave in the transition region, where differences in conductivity, thermal expansion, and melting temperatures can increase the risk of weld failure.
MSC Software’s Marc was used for nonlinear, transient thermal finite element analysis of butt welding, including a 3-D model of copper and AISI304 stainless steel plates and a double ellipsoidal heat source model. The simulation helped identify temperature distribution and heat affected zones, and showed that offsetting the welding arc toward the copper plate could shift peak temperature toward the interface or weld line. Gurdeep Singh said matching the results with experimental data showed the approach could reduce material waste, lower costs, and improve the life of welded parts.
