Marc Accurately Predicts Results of Dynamic Tensile Extrusion Test

TECHDYN Engineering, a research and development spin-off from the University of Cassino and Southern Lazio in Italy, needed a way to predict material behavior under extreme loading conditions. The company was developing a new material model for applications involving large deformations, high strain rates, elevated temperatures, and impact dynamics, where physical testing is costly and difficult to control.

Using MSC Software’s Marc implicit finite element software, TECHDYN implemented the model as a user defined function and simulated dynamic tensile extrusion tests on OFHC copper. The calculated fragment number, size, and shape matched the test results closely, and fragment length was predicted within a +5%/-10% error band. TECHDYN said Marc’s accuracy and modeling capabilities will help it evaluate more design alternatives while reducing product development cost and leadtime.
