L&L Products - Customer Case Study

L&L Products, a provider of innovative engineering solutions to the automotive industry, faced the challenge of moving towards greener technology by replacing classical metal designs with composite structures. Their goal was to leverage the performance of composite materials while tackling the difficulties of the injection molding process, specifically requiring a high-quality prediction of impact on a short fiber reinforced stiffener beam. To address this, they worked with MSC Software using the Digimat platform.

The solution from MSC Software involved creating a strain rate dependent micromechanical material model, mapping fiber orientations from Moldflow onto the structural mesh, and solving a nonlinear multi-scale analysis with Digimat coupled to Radioss. This approach yielded an excellent correlation with experimental data on both the force-displacement curve and the failure location. The drastic improvement in predictivity enabled L&L Products to achieve a robust and cost-efficient lightweight design.
