A MSC Software Case Study
The customer ISEMP, an organization focused on integrative simulation and engineering, faced the challenge of simulating residual stresses and micro-damage in carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRP) at the micro scale. Their goal was to understand how the curing process leads to defects like micro-cracking and delamination. To address this, they used MSC Software's Digimat-FE product.
MSC Software provided a solution using Digimat-FE to generate realistic representative volume elements (RVEs) of the material's microstructure for use with external solvers. This enabled a detailed FE-simulation of the curing process, which successfully identified the origins of micro-defects and showed that the highest stresses occur at the fiber-matrix interface and between closely spaced fibers. The solution provided ISEMP with a powerful tool for in-depth analysis of complex microstructures for both research and education.
