Interseals, a gasket manufacturer serving the automotive industry and other markets, needed a better way to design rubber components that undergo large deformations and complex nonlinear behavior. When its engineers relied on experience and handbook formulas, initial prototypes usually missed customer requirements, leading to two more iterations, with each iteration costing an average of 5,000 Euros and taking six to eight weeks.
Interseals evaluated three leading nonlinear finite element analysis packages and chose MSC Software’s Marc because it produced the most accurate results on test cases and was easy to use. Using Marc and Mentat, Interseals simulated gasket designs, refined the geometry, and avoided extra prototype cycles; the customer approved the first prototypes, saving an estimated 10,000 Euros in tooling costs and enabling delivery 16 weeks earlier than normal.
