Failure Prediction of hybrid UD/Woven Laminated Pin-Loaded Joints

e-Xstream engineering used MSC Software’s Digimat to study laminate T-stiffeners for aerospace applications. The company needed to account for manufacturing defects such as dry spots or voids in the noodle, which could change the mechanical properties of the part and affect progressive damage during pull-off testing.

MSC Software’s Digimat was used with finite element analysis to calibrate the behavior of the healthy material and then compute the stiffness and strength of the material with voids. The approach helped e-Xstream engineering understand the failure sequence, capture the progressive loss of stiffness, and evaluate failure modes and load levels for the structure.
