Co-Simulation Helps Win Order to Supply Seals for a New Model Vehicle

Standard Profil, a European automotive sealing supplier, needed a way to simulate the full door-closing process and predict the force required to close a vehicle door. The company used MSC Software’s Marc nonlinear finite element analysis software to model seal behavior, and worked with Bias Engineering to address the complex interactions involved in door closing, including the latch, weather seal, air-binding effect, hinge axis, and check-link.

MSC Software’s Adams multibody dynamics software was used in the simulation, and Adams-Marc co-simulation was applied to calculate door dynamics and seal resistance in real time. The results showed a minimum closing velocity of 820 mm per second, helped Standard Profil win an order to supply seals for a new model vehicle, and made it possible to test new seal designs in much less time and at a lower cost than physical prototyping.
