Case Study: DEMA reduces stamping waste and costs with MSC Nastran

A MSC Software Case Study

Preview of the DEMA SpA Case Study

Aerospace Supplier, DEMA, uses Simulation to Save Time and Money

DEMA SpA, a major tier-one aerospace supplier, faced challenges in maintaining allowable stress concentrations and reducing expensive secondary operations during the metal stamping of a critical aluminum acoustic barrier component. To address these issues, the company turned to vendor MSC Software and utilized their MSC Nastran implicit nonlinear solver for finite element analysis.

The solution implemented by MSC Software allowed DEMA engineers to simulate the stamping operation, which highlighted a stress concentration problem and excess material requiring trimming. Through iterative virtual prototyping with MSC Nastran, the design was modified to eliminate both issues. This resulted in the die working perfectly on the first try, saving DEMA a substantial amount of money and time by avoiding the need for multiple physical tooling iterations and a secondary trimming operation.
