Adams Simulation of Hose Routing Helps Reduce Time to Market by Six Weeks

Navistar worked with MSC Software to improve how it designed brake hose routing for heavy-duty trucks. Its engineers needed to understand the deformed shape and motion of hoses during suspension and steering movement, but in the past they could only check routing late in the process after building a prototype, which often required 2 to 4 design iterations over 6 weeks.

Using MSC Software’s Adams and the new FE Part modeling object, Navistar and Tech Mahindra simulated hose behavior across suspension and steering positions and validated the results against physical tests. The simulation matched test results in each steering position, helped the team evaluate new hose configurations in about two weeks, and is expected to bring new vehicles to market six weeks faster than before.
